The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR)

is responsible for the operation of the California state prison and parole systems. It was formerly known as the California Department of Corrections.

In 2004, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger changed the structure of this Department and the California Youth Authority (CYA). The California Youth Authority, the state's youth prison agency, was dissolved and became part of the California Department of Corrections. As a result, the agency became known as the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Currently, the California Youth Authority is known as the Division of Juvenile Justice, which is under the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
